12.12.09 Tower Hill Vixens 1 v Carterton FC 0.

Both teams took a little while to settle on a very heavy pitch, but once they got into their stride it was a very competitive and entertaining match. Carterton played well for the first quarter of the game putting together some good moves that finished with Rebecca Jenkins crossing some dangerous balls into the Tower Hill goal area, unfortunately for Carterton they weren’t able to finish off the moves. Tower Hill had Carterton pinned back in their half for the latter part of the first half; fortunately for Carterton their goalie Amber Ianniello was able to intercept some very good corner kicks during this period to relieve the pressure for Carterton.
The teams turned around all honours even at half time and although Carterton pressed on winning a lot of ball in the middle through Genevieve Miles, they just couldn’t find that extra touch needed to put themselves ahead. At one point the Tower Hill goal keeper managed to save the ball at the second attempt right on the goal line following a close range shot from Cartertons’ Sophie Riley. Tower Hill made the breakthrough they were looking for half-way through the second half catching Carterton on the break. A well struck shot from outside the goal area found the corner of the goal to put them ahead. Carterton upped their game for the remainder of the match with Lucy Riley in particular working hard at the back for Carterton intent upon moving the ball forward under control to keep the momentum going. Unfortunately for Carterton Tower Hill were equal to the task and held on to their goal advantage right up to the final whistle. Cartertons’ ‘Girl of the Game’ was goalie Amber Ianniello for a very good all-round performance.

05.12.09 Carterton FC 1 v Chinnor Youth 1

The first half was goalless with both teams competing very well against each other in very good conditions.  Chinnor had their best chances of the game in the first half almost scoring on the break at one stage; however it was Carterton that had the best opportunities of the first half particularly towards the end when they had Chinnor pinned down for a long period of time, unfortunately they were unable to convert that pressure into goals.

Chinnor scored earlier on in the second half, against the run of play, when a long clearance from Hayley Osborne (in her own half) was allowed to run along the ground down the middle of the pitch and into the Carterton net.  Carterton were immediately back onto the attack and a period of continuous pressure brought a penalty for hand-ball.  Rebecca Jenkins stepped up to the ball and smashed it against the cross bar; a missed opportunity for Carterton that allowed Chinnor subsequently to clear their lines.  Carterton continued to play attacking football while Chinnor were determined to defend their lead.  Lucy Riley and Sophie Stevens played particularly well at the back for Carterton and kept pumping the ball forward to keep up the momentum of play.  Genevieve Miles (Capt) dominated the middle of the pitch for Carterton ensuring that they kept up the pressure.  Rebecca Jenkins was full of running for Carterton and try as she might with lots of shots and some great efforts (one shot struck the right-hand upright) she just could not find the net.  Carterton scored their goal half way through the second half through Genevieve Miles following a goal mouth scramble.  Carterton continued to pile on the pressure and dominate the game for the remainder of the match with their attacking play and Chinnor continued to defend like demons.  Cartertons’ goal keeper Amber Ianniello had very little to do in the second half compared to the Chinnor goal keeper who was kept very busy and overall had a very good game ensuring Chinnor held onto a draw.  Overall it was a very good and entertaining game of football.  Cartertons’ ‘Girl of the Game’ was Lucy Riley for a great all-round performance.

28.11.09 Benson 1 v Carterton FC 1.

Carterton took a little while to settle into the game on a rough uneven ground against an inhospitable cold wind. Carterton had numerous opportunities to score right in front of goal, but it wasn’t until the later part of the first half that they managed to find the net. The move started with Rebecca Jenkins collecting the ball in her half and dribbling into the Benson half, Rebecca subsequently struck a long pass that dissected the Benson defence and found Sophie Riley on the edge of the Benson goal area, Sophie controlled the ball well and quickly finished off the move with a well placed strike into the corner of the goal, completing a thoroughly deserved goal.
Carterton turned around to play with the wind in the second half. Carterton were awarded a penalty about 5 minutes into the second half which should have extended their lead, however the Benson Goal Keeper stood her ground and made a good save. This proved to be just the impetus Benson required, for as Carterton continued to push forward they were caught napping in defence as Benson countered attacked minutes later. A long clearance found the Benson forward on the halfway line that subsequently beat the Carterton defence in a long run for the goal and finished off with a great strike in to the bottom left corner. Carterton relentlessly attacked the Benson goal area for the remaining 10 minutes of the game, but try as they might they couldn’t find the net in a packed goal area against a stubborn defence. The result was a good point for Benson and a disappointing draw for Carterton.

07.11.09 Summertown Stars 1 v Carterton FC 10

Carterton got into the game very quickly and scored within the first couple of minutes through Capt Genevieve Miles following up a tackle she had just made outside the Summertown goal area and dribbling into the box to score in the corner. Carterton’s second goal (probably the best of the game) was scored by Sophie Stevens. Sophie received the ball on the left side of the goal area from a well struck corner taken by Rebecca Jenkins on the right side. Sophie controlled the ball very well and calmly struck the ball into the net from just inside the goal area. Summertown fought back well and made every attempt to get back in the game, unfortunately for them Carterton’s defence (Emiley Dempster, Lucy Riley and G/K Amber Ianniello) were quick to react and stem their advances. Carterton’s Sophie Riley scored the 3rd goal having received the ball from Rebecca Jenkins out on the right wing. Sophie controlled the ball well and placed it calmly into the net. Carterton’s substitute Emily Little came on for Carterton after ten minutes and gave a good performance ensuring Carterton kept up the pressure in attack. Rebecca Jenkins scored Carterton’s 4th goal having won a couple of tackles on the edge of the goal area and dribbling into the box before striking the ball home hard. Genevieve Miles scored Carterton’s 5th goal confidently taking a well made pass across the goal area from Sophie Riley and striking the ball off the post into the net.
Summertown started the 2nd half with a new resolve and mounted some good attacks of their own. The tide turned again though when Carterton’s Sophie Riley collected the ball in the Summertown goal area to make it 6 goals. Carterton received a free kick on the edge of Summertown’s 6 yard box (back pass to goal keeper) which Rebecca Jenkins took quickly passing the ball backwards for Genevieve Miles to score her hat-trick (Carterton’s 7th goal). Half way through the second half Summertown caught Carterton on the break. They were quick to follow up some tackles of their own just inside the Carterton half and with a quick injection of pace they were up on the Carterton goal area to score a well deserved goal of their own. Some minutes later though Carterton’s winger Rebecca Jenkins received the ball in her own half from broken play; Rebecca ran outside the Summertown defenders down the right side before running into the goal area and striking the ball home for Carterton’s 8th goal. Sophie Riley scored her hat-trick (Carterton’s 9th goal) after Summertown failed to make any distance from a free kick taken in their goal area. Sophie was left unmarked on the edge of the area and quickly converted a simple pass into an empty net. Carterton’s 10th goal and Rebecca Jenkins hat-trick came from another long solo run made from her own half finishing with a hard shot that deflected off of a defender into the net. Carterton’s conclusive win was the result of a hard fought team effort. Carterton’s ‘Girl of the Game’ was Sophie Stevens for a terrific goal and great all-round performance.

17.10.09 Carterton FC 8 v Banbury United 1

Carterton settled very quickly into the game and scored within the first couple of minutes. The goal came through a short pass from Genevieve Miles to Sophie Riley who was waiting in the goal area. Sophie took the ball first time, turned and struck the ball hard into the back of the net. Carterton had their tails up from then on and as much as Banbury tried to clear the ball from their end of the pitch Carterton were straight back at them. Carterton’s defence of Emily Dempster and Lucy Riley were quick to tackle and start the ball moving forward again. Carterton’s passing from the back and mid-field play was very instrumental in setting up some very good moves. Genevieve Miles was particularly quick to win the ball in the centre of the pitch and her subsequent distribution kept Carterton momentum going forward. Carterton’s wingers Rebecca Jenkins, Sophie Stevens (inc sub Emily Little) and centre midfielder Genevieve Miles ensured their centre forward Sophie Riley received plenty of good balls from which she netted a total of 5 goals in the first half from in and around the Banbury goal area. The score would have been higher but for the resilients of the Banbury goal keeper Georgia Condi who pulled off some excellent saves and kicked the ball particularly well through out the match.
Banbury looked a more settled team in the second half and had Carterton under pressure on a number of occasions; unfortunately they could not convert all that pressure into goals as Carterton's goal keeper Amber Ianniello was on her usual good form. Sophie Riley scored a further 2 goals for Carterton before Banbury managed to score. Banburys goal was scored by Emily Parker who made a determined individual run straight into the Carterton goal area and their defenders; Emily won the resulting tussle and struck the ball hard into the net for a well deserved goal in the last 10 minutes of the game. Carterton were still full of energy though and struck back straight away from the resulting kick off. Sophie Riley passed the ball out wide to Rebecca Jenkins on the right wing. Rebecca’s next two touches took her straight past the Banbury defenders and into the Banbury goal area where she drove the ball home for one of the best goals of the game. This was a resounding victory for Carterton, who’s ‘Girl of the Game’ was Sophie Riley for a fantastic 7 goal haul.

03.10.09 Kidlington 0 v Carterton FC 1.

Both teams began this game in a very competitive spirit. Carterton had a slight wind advantage in the first half which they made the most of winning a greater proportion of possession through-out the first half. Carterton always looked dangerous in attack through their mid field and attack made up of Sophie Stevens, Genevieve Miles, Rebecca Jenkins and Sophie Riley working very hard together. Carterton kept the pressure on the Kidlington defence through a series of long throw-ins (Emily Dempster and Lucy Riley) and some great corners taken by Rebecca Jenkins. Unfortunately for Carterton the Kidlington defence were equal to the task, working very hard together to prevent them from scoring. It wasn’t all one way traffic though in the first half; Kidlington hit Carterton on the break a number of occasions through their centre forward and if it wasn’t for Carterton’s goal keeper Amber Ianniello pulling off a number of great saves (one quick reaction save in particular that she forced on to the cross bar and calmly collected back into her hands) they could have found themselves trailing against the run of play.
Both teams turned around honours equal at half-time; however it was Kidlington that had the wind advantage now which was growing in strength all the time. Kidlington took full advantage of the wind mounting attack after attack. The Carterton Goalie (Amber) and defenders Emily Dempster and Lucy Riley were kept very busy in the goal area. Carterton’s wingers Sophie Stevens and Rebecca Jenkins were reduced very much to a defensive role in the second half. Carterton’s Captain, Genevieve Miles, battled on continuously through the second half in mid-field with great determined effort winning more than her fare share of the ball in order to keep the Kidlington attack at bay. Carterton were reduced very much to hitting Kidlington on the break against a strong wind. This they did successfully halfway through the second half when Rebecca Jenkins broke clear with the ball from her own half and raced up the right side towards the Kidlington goal area. Rebecca’s final strike took a deflection off of a defender that beat the goal keeper to put Carterton ahead. Kidlington kept the pressure on the Carterton defence for the remainder of the game. Carterton’s goal keeper was kept very busy in particular; fortunately she was equal to everything that was thrown at her. Carterton eventually finished winners in a well contested match. Carterton’s ‘Girl of the Game’ was goal keeper Amber Ianniello for a very consistent performance through-out that won the match for Carterton.

26.09.09 Wantage 2 v Carterton FC 2.

Carterton took along time to get started against a competitive Wantage team. During the first quarter the Carterton defence was in disarray and the Wantage forwards took full advantage. Wantage went a goal up after approximately 10 mins with a well taken goal straight up the middle of the pitch. Wantage could have increased their lead on a couple of occasions but for the intervention of the Carterton goal keeper Amber Ianniello. Carterton struck back 5 minutes later with a well struck 20 yd shot from the middle of the pitch by Rebecca Jenkins. Rebecca could have scored a second goal from close range but unfortunately only managed to put it over the bar.
Half Time: - Wantage 1 v Carterton FC 1.
After half time Carterton began to improve, winning a lot of ball in the centre of the pitch through some strong mid field play by their Capt Genevieve Miles. Carterton had Wantage under pressure for a while dominating play through a number of quick throw-ins by Emily Dempster and some well struck corners by Rebecca Jenkins. Following a period of pressure, Carterton went into the lead through Sophie Riley scoring from close range. All looked good for Carterton at this stage, but Wantage soon struck back following a deflection from a well struck shot off of a Carterton defenders back. Carterton tried very hard to win their lead back through some hard work in particular by Genevieve and Rebecca, on the right hand side, clearing their lines and trying to set up a number of Carterton attacks. The match finished in a draw which was probably a good reflection of the game.
Carterton’s ‘Girl of the Game’ was Rebecca Jenkins.

19.09.09 Carterton FC 2 v Tower Hill Vixens 0.

Carterton U10 girls began their first league match of the season with an impressive victory against a competitive Tower Hill side on a very hot morning at Monahan Way.
Both teams took a little while to settle, however after some frantic play it was Carterton that settled first and began to dominate play. The first goal of the game came after approx 10 mins from Sophie Riley in the Tower Hill goal area, on the end of a pass from Rebecca Jenkins, she managed to turn and place the ball in the corner as the goal keeper came out. Carterton almost scored a second through a well struck free kick taken from the edge of the Tower Hill goal area by Rebecca Jenkins. The ball was kept out by a great save from the Tower Hill goal keeper.
Half Time:- Carterton FC 1 v Tower Hill Vixens 0.
Carterton turned around worthy leaders at this stage of the game, however Tower Hill mounted some good attacks of their own but the Carterton goal keeper Amber Ianniello was always equal to the task and kept Carterton in front. Sophie Riley could have scored 2 further goals for Carterton from two similar one on one situations with the Tower Hill goal keeper. Both times the Tower Hill goal keeper saved both shots very well. Carterton got the break through to seal the game ¾ of the way through the game once again through Sophie Riley this time on the end of a pass from Genevieve Miles that she managed to strike from out side the goal area past the Tower Hill keeper as she rushed out. The ball trickled over the goal line into the left hand corner. The match was well contested throughout by both teams with Carterton the deserved winners.
Carterton’s ‘Girl of the Game’ was goal keeper Amber Ianniello for a very consistant performance throughout the match.

Friendly 12.09.09 Carterton FC 5 v Chinnor Youth 1

Carterton U10 Girls started the season on a real high with an impressive first match performance against a good Chinnor team. Both teams started well, however it was Carterton that started to take control of the game once all their players settled down into their positions. Carterton’s first goal followed a move in the Chinnor box with Sophie Riley passing to Genevieve Miles who drove the ball into the L/H corner of the Chinnor goal. The lead was short lived though when a poor pass across the goal area was capitalised upon by a Chinnor forward who struck the ball home easily to take the game to 1 each at half time.
Carterton’s second goal came early in the second half after a Chinnor defender picked the ball up by mistake in their goal area. Rebecca Jenkins took the free kick from the edge of the box and struck it superbly pass the Chinnor defensive wall high into the net. Carterton began to dominate the game more and more as they started to win the mid-field battle. Sophie Riley scored Carterton’s third goal from in side the Chinnor goal area having received a nice little pass from Genevieve which she struck into the corner of the goal. Carterton didn’t have play all their own way though as Chinnor fought back. Carterton were required to chase back a number of times and put in some timely tackles to break down the Chinnor attacks. Defenders Lucy Riley, Emily Dempster and goal keeper Amber Ianniello all played their part in the Carterton defence repelling the Chinnor attacks. Carterton’s fourth goal was scored from Genevieve from inside the Chinnor goal area following a period of dominance in the Chinnor half. Carterton’s fifth goal was scored by Sophie Riley following a quick break out from their own half. Genevieve passed the ball up the middle of the pitch to Sophie whom collected it just inside the Chinnor box, turned and slotted it into the corner of the goal finishing off a very promising display of football from all the Carterton Girls.

QF League Cup

On a freezing spring morning we welcomed Banbury to Monahan Way for the QF of the League Cup. Having only narrowly won the previous encounter we knew we were in for a tough game. This was a really hard fought game with plenty of big tackles going in from the ‘Fairer Sex’. Neither goalie was particularly troubled in the first half with the majority of the play being in the centre third of the pitch. The second half was slightly more open with both teams pushing forward looking for an opener. We thought we had taken the lead with 6 minutes to go when Molly found the back of the net, but this was ruled out for offside. A minute later Natalie latched on to a long clearance raced forward and neatly found the bottom corner of the net. Banbury piled on the pressure with a string of corners but were unable to find a way through a crowded goalmouth.

This was a great game of football to watch, played at 100 mph and with all the girls giving 100%, well done to you all!

Girl of the game went to Lizzie Monk; she was a rock in midfield, put in some crunching tackles and never stopped running, well done Lizzie.

27.02.10 Tower Hill Vixens 1 v Carterton FC 4

On a playing surface that more resembled Witney Lakes than West Witney Sports Ground we once again locked horns with local rivals Tower Hill. The girls were in high spirits due to the conditions and were as enthusiastic as I have seen them in a long time. We kicked off and immediately pushed forward. Our early pressure was rewarded when Charlotte’s long throw found Molly inside the box, a smart turn and shot opened the scoring. Tower Hill pushed for an equaliser but Carterton doubled their lead when Chloe set Natalie free to double the lead. We continued to push and the goal of the game came on 15 minutes. Charlotte found Molly who carried the ball and then hit a pin point pass to Millie, she took the ball in her stride took a couple of touches and fired a great shot across the keeper into the back of the net.
The second half was a different affair and Tower Hill were a lot stronger. Millie Harris was a constant threat down the right wing getting in cross after cross. On 37 Minutes one of these crosses found Amy Williamson inside the box, she coolly took the ball and gave Nakita no chance. Our response was almost immediate with Natalie capitalising on a goalmouth scramble to fire home and restore the lead. The last 10 minutes were end to end with both teams creating chances but the keepers were on top.
Girl of the game was awarded to Chloe, she was a constant threat, taking on and beating defenders, her tackling was solid and her composure on the ball has improved with every game.

20.02.10 Carterton FC 0 v Swindon Spitfires 4

On another cold Carterton morning we welcomed the Spitfires to Monahan Way. For the second game running we didn’t turn up in the first half, Swindon were hungrier, stronger in the tackle and a lot more inventive than we were. 3-0 down at half time things did not look good.

Once again the girls were told in no uncertain terms that they were staring a heavy defeat in the face. Once again the response was pleasing; the second half was a highly competitive and entertaining battle with both teams giving their all. We were stronger in the tackle, more competitive and more imaginative. Swindon continued to press and some great saves from Nakita kept the score down. Unfortunately we were unable to properly test the Spitfires keeper but I cannot commend the girls highly enough for their  second half performance. Both teams gave their all in difficult conditions, well done girls. Special mention should go to Julianne Russel who hit a great hat trick.

Girl of the game was a difficult choice; the second half response was brilliant; Chloe gave everything, Molly held play up and was always a threat, Charlotte was here there and everywhere. In the end Georgina, for a very solid game at the back and Nakita for 5 good one on one saves shared the award

6.02.10 Carterton FC 0 v Didcot Casuals 1

On a freezing morning the girls were eager to start our first game in 8 weeks. Didcot are always difficult opponents and today was no different. We kicked off and were immediately put on the back foot. The long break didn’t seem to have done us any favours, Didcot were first to every ball and deservedly took the lead when Becci Bostocks shot from the edge of the box found a route through a crowed goalmouth and into the back of the net. The remainder of the first half followed in the same vane with Didcot piling on the pressure.
The girls were told in no uncertain terms that unless they bucked their ideas up they would end up on the receiving end of a heavy defeat. The talk seemed to work, the second half was a highly competitive and entertaining battle with both teams giving their all. Although we enjoyed a lot of possession and a string of corners we were unable to properly test the Didcot keeper. Nakita Alder pulled off 2 good saves to keep the score line close but unfortunately we were unable to capitalise on our possession. Both teams gave their all in difficult conditions, well done girls.
For the second game running Annabel Light was awarded girl of the game. On a day that saw our defence under a lot of pressure she was always up to the challenge and her situational awareness seems to be improving with each game.

12.12.09 Carterton FC 1 v Banbury United 0

We needed a win today to turn our season around, after a promising start we seemed to be on a downward spiral; the ever improving Banbury would provide a stern test. On a gorgeous winters morning we kicked off to get the second half of the season under way. The first half was mainly played in the centre third of the field, neither goalie really being troubled. The first real chance of the match came when Natalie tore down the wing and put in a perfect cross for Molly her shot was brilliantly saved by Ellen Shea in the Banbury goal. Half time arrived with both teams believing they could go on and get all 3 points.
Banbury started the second half and once again it was an end to end affair. We had a long period of intense pressure with corner after corner but were unable to convert any of the chances that came our way. From one of these corners Banbury broke from their own penalty box and went the whole length of the pitch, only to be denied by some good goalkeeping from Nakita. The deadlock was finally broken when Annabel launched a massive throw which found Molly inside the six yard box: a clever turn and shot gave Ellen no chance. As Banbury pushed for an equaliser chances came at both ends. This was a highly entertaining game of football and both teams should be proud of their efforts.
Girl of the game was a difficult choice, Rosie was commanding in central midfield, Nakita was always on the front foot and Molly was a constant threat; however it was decided that Annabel’s strong tackling, excellent long throws and always attacking the ball were the clinching factors, well played Annabel.

28.11.09 Carterton FC 3 v Chinnor Youth 7

Hat tricks are something to be celebrated, however when that hat trick is for 3 defeats on the trot it is something that is not a pleasant experience. We started the stronger and went ahead when Charlotte Grants throw in found Natalie Webb unmarked in the box, her first time shot giving the goalie no chance. This should have been the launch pad we needed; however far too many mistakes and a failure to get hold of the ball and play the kind of football we know we are capable of gave Chinnor a massive upper hand; 5 goals without reply and their lead was unassailable. Molly Bishop pulled one back from the spot to narrow the gap but Chinnor went straight down the other end to maintain their advantage. Molly got her second with a great strike from the edge of the box but once again Chinnor’s reply was immediate and again gave them a 4-goal cushion.

Chinnor truly deserved their victory against a lack lustre Carterton team who seemed bereft of ideas and made far too many basic mistakes. We need to buck our ideas up and try to go back to playing the sort of football we were at the start of the season. Girl of the game went to Charlotte Grant, who despite being injured late in the first half gave the kind of never say die performance all the girls will need to display if we are to get out of this losing streak.

21.11.09 Didcot Casuals 3 Carterton FC 1

After last week’s strong performance against Spitfires we were optimistic going into today’s game. With only 9 players available and playing on a heavy pitch it was always going to be hard going but the girls were confident. Didcot started the match the stronger and penned us back into our half for long periods. Chloe McCulloch and Rosie Herridge in particular were covering a lot of ground and making some strong challenges. The deadlock was broken when Zoe Adams found herself alone at the back post to put Didcot into the lead. Our response was immediate and within a minute we were level. A Didcot defender handled the ball in the box and Molly Bishop gave the goalie no chance from the spot kick firing low and hard. We then had a good period of pressure but half time arrived with the honours even.
Didcot started the second half the stronger and pressured the Carterton goal from the start. Their lead was restored when Jordan Harris slotted home. The best goal of the game was saved till last when Jordan Harris hit a looping shot from 20 yards to score her second and Didcots third. This was an excellent game of football played under difficult conditions, well played both teams. Girl of the game was once again a difficult decision but Rosie Herridge sealed it with her never give up performance in the centre of midfield.

14.11.09 Swindon Spitfires 6 Carterton FC 0

We always know what to expect against Spitfires, a really hard game and horrendous weather, today once again we got both. I am going to keep this short and sweet because I don’t feel I can do the girls performance justice without writing pages. All I want to say is each and every player gave 110% and deserved more from the game. Without taking anything away from Swindon on another day the score could have been a lot closer and 6 – 0 slightly flatters. Well played girls I am really proud of you all and well played Swindon.

Girl of the game was a very difficult decision; all the girls played their hearts out. It was decided however that Georgina’s strong and commanding performance in defence was enough to warrant the award.

07.11.09 Carterton FC 4 v Tower Hill Vixens 1

Liverpool, London, Birmingham, everyone has a local derby and today was ours. Tower Hill visited Monahan Way on a chilly autumn morning. To quote a footballing cliché this was definitely a game of two halves. We kicked off and went straight on the offensive, the ball barely came out the Tower Hill half and the deadlock was finally broken on 6 minutes. Chloe broke down the left and slotted the ball inside to Molly; she went past the last defender and fired the ball across the keeper into the back of the net. 2 minutes the lead was doubled when Natalie burst through the middle of the park to hit a low left footed drive into the back of the net. We piled on the pressure and deservedly got a third when Mollie found Natalie to bring up her second. With 5 minutes to go till half time Lizzie lifted the ball over the keepers head to make it 4 – 0 at half time.
I don’t know what Dave Andrews said to his girls at half time but it definitely worked. Straight from the kick off Tower Hill put us on the back foot and within 2 minutes Millie Harris made the most of the confusion in our penalty area to narrow the gap. Tower Hill grew in confidence as the game went on and caused us a lot of problems at the back. The game was now end to end and both teams could have added to their totals. Molly hit the post and Lizzie fired over from close range. Had Tower Hill played from the start like they did in the second half the game might have been closer but over the 50 minutes this was a deserved victory for Carterton.
Girl of the game was awarded to Millie, a girl whose confidence has grown immensely in the past few weeks. She has always had a great shot and great speed but lacked the confidence to express herself. She has come on leaps and bounds and has started getting stuck in after lots of encouragement, well played Millie.

17.10.09 Carterton FC 1 v Swindon Town 3.

We were expecting a battle and that is what we got. Only being able to field 9 players the girls knew that they would have to give their all for 50 minutes against the 12 girl squad of Swindon. We started with Nakita in goals, Georgina, Annabel and Charlotte in defence, Millie, Natalie and Mollie in midfield and Rosie and Molly up front. Swindon kicked off and settled the quicker creating some good early chances. As the game progressed the play became more even with both teams going close. The deadlock was finally broken on 18 minutes when Chloe Browns long range shot was too high for Nakita to keep out. Half time arrived and the girls were told to keep playing the way they had been.

We kicked off the second half and once again Swindon started the stronger causing our defence a lot of problems. It was during one of these attacks that for the second time this season we scored an own goal to double the lead.  With 12 minutes to go Swindon scored again when Natalie Wood tuned a cross in from the right at the near post. This third goal seemed to give the girls the impetus they needed to go for all out attack. Millie broke on the right and hit a screamer of a shot which Rhiannon Brown did brilliantly to save. The Swindon defence now seemed to be panicking each time we went forward. Molly received the ball just inside the Swindon half, she beat 2 players before freeing Natalie who  burst forward and, despite the best efforts of the Swindon defender she ran on and chipped the goalie to reduce the deficit.  With 8 minutes to go I believed there was still time to get something out of the game but with Town hitting us on the counter attack each time we piled forward the game faded out with Swindon taking the spoils. This was an excellent game of football, played at a high tempo and with a lot of very skilful football. Both teams deserve credit for giving it 100% throughout the whole match.  Girl of the game was once again a hard decision; all the girls played exceptionally well and gave their all for the whole 50 minutes. It was decided to give the award to Charlotte for her constant running, great tackling and never give up attitude

10.10.09 Marston St Angels 2 Carterton FC 4

4 out of 4, we couldn’t have asked for a better start to the season. In total contrast to last week the weather was gorgeous. We only had 8 players so Marston very graciously played 8 v 8. Marston played on a full size pitch and with no subs; the girls did brilliantly lasting the whole game without a rest. We started the stronger and deservedly went in front when Mollie latched onto a through ball from Molly to open the scoring. Natalie was causing mayhem down the right and with Rosie covering every inch of the pitch we were in total control of the game. Another goal was always going to come and when Rosie found Molly inside the box she didn’t need a second invitation to double the lead. At this point we were cruising and expected a big win but Marston had other ideas. Jade Scarfe turned the ball in from a goal mouth scramble and 2 minutes later Bonnie Lewis hit a screamer form 20 yards to equal the score. The half time talk was about staying focused, we knew the goals would come but we needed to maintain our discipline.
Marston kicked off the second half and were put on the back foot, Mollie and Natalie were causing trouble down the wings and could both have scored before Natalie set Molly free, she battled with the last defender before hitting the ball across the goalie into the bottom corner. When Marston did manage to mount an attack Georgina, Annabel and Charlotte were more than equal to the job. Rosie wrapped up the scoring when she tapped in Mollie’s cross from the left. So, we keep winning, I don’t think we have hit top form yet, so watch out when we do. Girl of the game went to Mollie, her improvement this season has been phenomenal, a great goal rounded off a great performance, keep going Mollie.

03.10.09 Carterton FC 3 v Oxford Bluebirds 2.

It was with some trepidation that we entered this game, we always struggle against Oxford and today would be no different. The wet and windy conditions were always going to make it hard work, but both teams tried to keep the ball on the ground and play a passing game. We definitely started the stronger putting pressure on the Bluebirds goal forcing 2 good saves out of Petra Bachrati. The deadlock was finally broken on 5 minutes when Molly Bishop went past 2 players before rounding the keeper to slot the ball home. The goal seemed to wake Oxford up and they pressed forward looking for the equaliser, Georgina, Annabel and Charlotte were kept very busy. After a period of scrappy play from both teams Anne Fromont pounced on the ball inside the box to level the score. Straight from the kick off Molly chased down a seeming lost cause and struck a perfect cross to find Natalie inside the box; her calm finish restored the lead. Not to be outdone Oxford went straight on the attack and within a minute of going behind equalised when Ellanor Jones fired the ball low and hard across the goal area and into the corner of the net.
We kicked off the second half playing against the wind. Once again we started the stronger of the 2 teams. With only 3 minutes played Natalie picked up the ball mid way inside the Oxford half, moved forward and fired the ball into the Bluebirds goal. Oxford responded and continued to push for a third goal pinning us back for long periods. As the weather took its toll the game slowed down, there were chances at both ends but neither team could find the finishing touch.
This was a hard fought battle with both teams giving their all. The girls should be proud of their efforts in such difficult conditions, well played to you all. Girl of the game was awarded to Natalie for 2 great goals and her drive from the centre of midfield.

25.09.09 Carterton FC 8 v Thame 0.

On a lovely autumn morning we welcomed Thame to Monahan Way. As the new girls in the league Thame were an unknown quantity and this reflected in our cautious start. Although we had a lot of possession there seemed to be a lack of cohesion. With 4 minutes on the clock Chloe found Natalie inside the box and she fired the ball into the net. On 10 minutes Natalie doubled the score and her personal tally when Millie found her with a long throw and she slotted the ball past the Thame keeper. On 15 minutes Georgina’s throw in found Molly on the edge of the box she beat 2 defenders before placing the ball into the corner of the net. Thame kept battling but were unable to threaten the Carterton goal.
At half time we talked about trying to relax and to communicate with each other, it’s all very well talking but if no one’s listening then we will always get 2 players going for the same ball. Carterton kicked off the second half and played some good football but were unable to break down a stubborn Thame defence. With 10 minutes of the half gone Chloe pounced on a short goal kick and played in Molly to fire the ball in from the edge of the box. Minutes later the ever improving Mollie beat 2 players to find Chloe who took the ball in her stride and side footed the ball past the advancing Thame keeper. The pressure was now starting to reap rewards and from another long throw in from Millie, Molly rounded 3 defenders before hitting the back of the net to bring up her hat trick. With the clock running down Molly cut the ball back for Mollie to fire the ball through a crowded box to score her first league goal and round off an excellent performance. With almost the last play of the match Natalie picked the ball up on the half way line, drove forward and from the edge of the box slotted the ball in for a well deserved hat trick. Girl of the game was a difficult decision Mollie continually threatened and scored, however Chloe pipped her at the post for some great dribbling, strong tackling and getting her first goal, well done Chloe.

5.09.09 Carterton FC 3 v Banbury 1
It was a glorious morning for our first game at 9 a side . Our opponents, Banbury, were an unknown quantity as they had played up a year last season, due to this we were expecting it to be a hard fought game.
We started in a 2-1-3-2 formation, Georgina Harriss, team captain won the toss and we kicked off the new season. Banbury started the stronger and spent most of the first 10 minutes in our half. Catherine Howge was a constant threat and Banbury could have been 3 up, a combination of good defending and goalkeeping prevented this. As we started to settle the ball was getting passed around and the chances started to come. The Deadlock was broken on 15 minutes when Natalie Webb found Molly Bishop on the edge of the box; she turned the defender and fired low into the corner. This goal seemed to settle the girls and they piled the pressure on the Banbury defence. With half time approaching Carterton doubled their lead when the Banbury keeper could only parry a fierce shot from Natalie which she followed up to tap the ball into the unguarded goal.
The half time team talk was about not conceding and getting another goal quickly and this wasn’t long in coming. Charlotte Grants long throw in found Molly whose shot just went inside the left hand post. The game went from end to end with plenty more scoring chances for both teams. With almost the last kick of the game Banbury got a deserved goal when the ball was unluckily deflected past the Carterton keeper. This was just the start we had hoped for and the girls can be proud of their seamless transition from 7’s to 9’s. No girl of the game was awarded we don’t have enough trophies to give all the girls one!!

27.02.10 Carterton FC 2 v Ducklington 0

A wet Saturday morning saw local team Ducklington come to Monaghan Way.
Our starting line up was Sophie Barnes in goal, Susan Oliver, Orla Kewley, Millie Eaton and Zoe Davidson in defence and Megan Rockett, Anise Da Silva Martins and Hollie Merriman up front.  Once again only eight players.  Ducklington kept it fair and only played 8 players as well!!!!
We kicked off and the first 10 minutes was a very evenly matched game with shots from both sides.  15 minutes in and Carterton had a corner which Ducklington cleared only for Zoe to cross back in and Orla, with a good finish scored her first goal for Carterton.
Ducklington kicked off the second half.  The girls in defence did a good job of keeping Ducklington at bay.  Megan had a couple of shots on goal but the keeper made some good saves.
Anise was awarded a free kick but chipped it over the goal.  But 15 minutes into the second half, Hollie, with a good shot scored Cartertons second.
A good fair match, enjoyed by all.
Player of the Match went to Orla Kewley.

13.02.10 Tower Hill Vixens 4 v Carterton FC 2

Cartertons line up for their match against Tower Hill was Sophie Barnes in goal, Susan Oliver, Orla Kewley, Millie Eaton and Zoe Davidson in defence.  Anise Da Silva Martins, Megan Rockett and Hollie Merriman up front.  With one player short this week Carterton played eight players to Tower Hills nine!
Carterton kicked off and held their own well, Tower Hill pushed hard and 10 minutes into the match Christina Snowdon scored for Tower Hill.  Carterton came straight back at them and 5 minutes later Hollie equalised. Play continued evenly with both sides having shots at goal and 5 minutes before half time Tower Hill went ahead with a goal from Jasmine Alder.
A good team talk at half time and the girls were determined, even though they were a player down. They had good posession, mostly in Tower Hills half, but with a good break Tower Hill got their third.  Carterton came  straight back with a good shot from Hollie to score her second goal.   Carterton continued to push with good shots from Megan but were unable to find the back of the net.  2 minutes before the end of the match and Tower Hill got their fourth.
Well played girls, you didn't deserve the final score line!
Player of the Match went to Zoe Davidson for her determination.

23.01.10 Carterton FC 1 v Cholsey Bluebirds 7

Carterton welcomed Cholsey to Monahan Way for our first match of the New Year.
Cartertons starting line up was Megan Rockett in goal, Susan Oliver, Millie Eaton, Sophie Barnes and Ellis Warner in defence. Orla Kewley, Anise Da Silva Martins and Georgina Graham in midfield with Hollie Merriman up front leaving Zoe Harrison as sub.
Carterton kicked off the first half and they played well with Hollie having a couple of good shots but unable to score. Then on 10 minutes Cholsey had a run down the right and with a good cross they scored their first. The girls were putting a few good moves together but were unable to get through the Cholsey defence. Cholsey were putting a few good shots on goal and Megan was doing well, for her first time in goal, to save. Then on 20 minutes Cholsey scored from a corner for their second, and then again on half time to make it 0-3 at half time.
In the second half Zoe came on for Orla for her first match. The girls played a lot better in the second half with shots coming more and more frequent, unfortunately not resulting in goals!
Cholsey managed to score 4 more in the second half but the girls never gave up and managed to pull one back towards the end of the second half.
Player of the Match went to Hollie Merriman.

05.12.09 Ducklington 2 v Carterton FC 2

Carterton went to Ducklington for our rescheduled match. Our starting line up was Sophie Barnes in goal, Orla Kewley, Mille Eaton, Ellis Warner and Susan Oliver in defence, Megan Rockett, Anise Da Silva Martins and Georgina Graham in midfield with Hollie Merriman up front. We had no subs!
Carterton kicked off on a very wet pitch. The game was quite evenly matched to begin with, with much of the play in the midfield. Then on eight minutes a corner gave Anise the first goal for Carterton. Both teams seemed to up the pace immediately with both having shots at goal which the keepers handled with ease. On twenty minutes Ducklington took a corner, Sophie seemed to catch well but the ball slipped out of her hands and Jen Pitt of Ducklington didn't miss the chance to make it one each!!
Ducklington kicked off the second half and with a long run down the left wing, there was a bit of miscommunication in the Carterton defence which gave Ruby Valvekens for Ducklington their second goal. Carterton were more determined than ever to get the ball into the back of the net with good runs down both wings and good shots from Anise and Hollie but neither going in. The pressure started to break down Ducklington with the ball hardly going out of the Ducklington half. Then on fifteeen minutes in the second half, one of the Ducklington players hand balled in the area to give a penalty. Hollie took it, struck it well but straight at the keeper, which she blocked but Hollie pounced and scored on the rebound. The last ten minutes saw the girls push hard but were unable to find the back of the net.
Well played girls. Player of the match went to Megan Rockett.

21.11.09 Kidlington 5  v Carterton FC 0

Carterton went to Kidlington knowing this was going to be a very hard match.
Our starting lineup was Hollie Merriman up front, with Anise Da Silva Martins on the left, Georgina Graham in the middle and Megan Rockett on the right.  Defence was Susan Oliver on the far left, then Ellis Warner and Millie Eaton and far right was Katrina Huggan, with Sophie Barnes in goal.
Kidlington kicked off and with some good pasing and ball control they seemed to dominate the mid field, although the girls did not let them have it all their own way and they battled hard to keep them at bay, but then with a good cross Kidlington scored their first goal on ten minutes.  Carterton went straight back at them from the centre with a good shot from Hollie being saved by the Kidlington keeper.  Then the goals for Kidlington came in very quick succession, and before we knew it, it was four nil.   The last three goals coming from mistakes on our part showing that there are still areas of the game we need to work on!!!
The second half was much more evenly matched with quite a few shots from both sides, but both keepers keeping the ball out.  Then with five minutes to go Kidlington got their fifth goal.
Well played girls, you didn't give up throughout the match!!
Player of the Match went to Sophie Barnes.

07.11.09 Carterton FC 1 v Chinnor 4

Carterton welcomed Chinnor to Monahan Way on a cold but sunny morning.
The Chinnor manager wanted to play 10 a side to give all the girls a good game. However the second half returned to 9 a side due to injury! Our starting line up was Sophie Barnes in goal, Anise Da Silva Martins, Millie Eaton, Ellis Warner and Susan Oliver in defence, Megan Rockett, Georgina Graham and Katrina Huggan in midfield with Orla Kewley and Hollie Merriman up front.
Chinnor kicked off for the start of the match but couldn't get through the Carterton defence. Then with a good run down the right, Megan passed to Hollie, but the ball went into the side of the net. The game was played with the majority of the play in the Chinnor half but on 10 minutes Chinnor made a break and with a mistake from defence scored their first goal. Carterton continued to be the dominant side with shots coming from Hollie, GG and Megan but with all credit to the Chinnor goalie were unable to score. On 18 minutes Chinnor made another run down the right wing and with a good cross scored their second. The game continued with corners at both ends but with neither team able to convert. Then right on the end of the first half Chinnor took a corner which was mis-hit by Cartertons defence to go over everyones head and into goal. No fault of the goalies!!
Second half and back to nine players, Carteton kicked off with a change. Anise went up front with Orla coming back into defence. Carterton continued to dominate the game and on 10 minutes into the second half were rewarded with a goal from Anise. Chinnor got their fourth goal right near the final whistle.
Although we seemed to dominate the match we were unable to score. The girls played well all match but obviously we need to work on finishing to score and more work in defence!!
Well played girls. Player of the Match went to Megan Rockett.

17.10.09 CUP Carterton FC 0 v Highworth Town 2 After Extra Time

Carterton welcomed Highworth to Monaghan Way for the first time.  Cartertons starting line up was Sophie Barnes in goal, Susan Oliver, Millie Eaton, Ellis Warner and Orla Kewley in defence, Laura Davidson, Georgina Graham and Megan Rockett in midfield with Hollie Merriman up front.
Carterton took the centre for the start of the match and with very even play from both sides gave both teams a few chances.  Highworth began to push even harder and were managing to get through the Carterton defence, but Sophie, showing how much she has improved in goal, made some very good saves!! Carterton found their feet later in the first half.  G G started to work hard in midfield and worked well with Hollie, but neither were able to find the back of the net, the Highworth keeper having to make some good saves.
Highworth kicked off for the second half and both sides were desperate to score the first goal with all the players battling hard.  There were a lot of corners for both sides but with good defending anf goal keeping there was still no score in the second half.
Carterton kicked off the extra time and three minutes in Highworth dashed down the right hand side and a good strike from Natalie Haines gave her her first goal!  Then again, three minutes into the second period of extra time, she scored her second.
Unlucky girls, you battled hard and played well!!
Player of the Match went to Sophie Barnes for her improved pay in goal.

10.10.09 Cholsey 7 v Carteton 1

On a nice sunny October morning Carterton went to Cholsey for our rescheduled match. Starting line up for Carterton was Sophie Barnes in goal, Susan Oliver, Ellis Warner, Anise Da Silva Martins and Millie Eaton in defence, Orla Kewley, Georgina Graham and Megan Rockett in midfield with Hollie Merriman as striker. Subs were Laura Davidson and Katrina Huggon.
Cholsey won the toss and elected ends giving Carterton the kick off. It was quite even play for the first few minutes, then with a mistake from our defence, Cholsey got their first goal on eight minutes. Carterton were pushing but were unable to find their way through, Cholsey caught Carterton on the break to score their second. Straight away Cholsey pushed again but with a good save from Sophie, a corner was conceded. Sophie, with injured fingers, was replaced by Megan, with Laura going into midfield. The corner was taken and gave Cholsey their third goal. The girls continued to battle on but on twenty minutes Cholsey broke away again resulting in their fourth. Their fifth came just before half time.
After a half time talk, Cholsey kicked off, the girls played much better, better communication and better passing. Ten minutes into the second half, Georgina, with a pass form Hollie, managed to score for Carterton. The girls continued to push with shots coming from all the midfield players, but unable to find the back of the net. Hollie hitting the posts again!!!
Cholsey scored again on thirty eight and forty three minutes to make the final score 7 - 1. The girls played much better in the second half and deserved a much closer score line. All agreed that defence needs work!!!
Player of the Match went to Millie Eaton.

26/09/09 Carterton FC 1 v St Edmunds 1.

Carterton welcomed  St Edmunds to Monahan Way on what turned out to be a really hot morning for the time of year.
Cartertons starting line up for todays match was Sophie Barnes in goal, Anise Da Silva Martins, Susan Oliver, Millie Eaton, Ellis Warner in defence, Laura Davison on the left wing, Georgina Graham in the middle, Megan Rocket on the right wing and Hollie Merriman up front, leaving Katrina Huggon as sub.
The girls knew this was going to be a very tough game but their spirits were high and they seemed up for the challenge.  St Edmunds kicked off and the ball went straight to the Carterton mid field and with some good passing the ball was soon in the St Edmunds area but was forced out for a goal kick.  Then it was St Edmunds turn, they came at us hard with the girls battling hard in defence to keep them out but were unable so it was down to Sophie to make a good save. The game then settled down with a lot of the play in midfield going a little one way and then the other.  There were not many shots on goal in the first part of the game because the defence on both sides would not let the opposing team through.
Then on the 18th minute St Edmunds managed to find enough space with a shot from Anna Jiminez which Sophie could not get too, putting St Edmunds in the lead.  The girls were not put off by this goal and straight from the centre they pushed and with a good shot from Hollie on the 20th minute it was one all, and all to play for.
Carterton had one change which was Katrina for Laura, Carterton kicked off for the second half and it was the same, with neither team giving an inch with shots coming from GG, Meagan and Hollie, who managed to hit the post again,  there were no more goals from either side but an enjoyable game of football for the players and spectators alike.
Player of the Match went to Laura Davison for much improved play.

19.09.09 Carterton FC 2 v Tower Hill Vixens 1

Carterton were glad to finally start the season with their first match at home against Tower Hill. The matches between these two local teams have always been hard fought and this one was no different!!
Cartertons starting line up was Sophie Barnes in goal, with Millie Eaton, Ellis Warner, Anise Da Silva Martins and Susan Oliver at the back, Orla Kewley, Georgina Graham and Megan Rockett in midfield and Hollie Merriman as striker. Laura Davison and Katrina Huggon were subs.
Carterton kicked off and got straight into the Tower Hill area but with a good clearance from their goal keeper Carterton were caught out with a break, but thanks to good defending from Millie and Susan it was put out for a corner. Play continued back and forth with good attacking and defending on both sides. Georgina has been practising the corners for the big pitch and it showed, they were getting into the right area all the time but we were unable to convert any thanks to some good defending and goal keeping on the Tower Hill side. With ten minutes left of the first half, Tower Hill managed to break the dead lock with a goal from Suzie Halsey. Carterton continued to battle on but then Susan had to come off injured to be replaced by Katrina and Orla came off for Laura to go on.
The second half saw Megan in goal and Sophie in defence. The girls seemed more determined with more shots on goal but it was ten minutes into the second half when Hollie had a shot, the keeper knocked it out, but back to Hollie who hit it again and the keeper had no chance from that range. Then with better passing and communication from the team Hollie got her second this spurred the girls on for more but they could not find the back of the net even with the bigger goals they still found the post a few times!!!

Player of the Match went to Millie Eaton.

Well done girls, the new players are coming on and showed they deserve their place on the team.

13.03.10   Carterton FC 4 v Oxford Bluebirds 1.

A beautiful, sunny morning welcomed Oxford to Monahan Way. This weekend the 6-nations rugby continues and the F1 season begins, yet could this be the sporting highlight? Bluebirds kick-off bang on time at 09:45. The start is fairly tight with little progress from either side despite Carterton’s one player disadvantage. It took Bluebirds six-minutes to create the first chance, with a strike which ended up just over the top of Carterton’s goal. Another six-minutes and they hit the crossbar from a free-kick and this was swiftly followed by another chance. The whole first-quarter was dominated by Bluebirds and a combination of the woodwork, an incredible save from Marta Dyet and strong defending by Gayna Eeles prevented them getting ahead. Carterton did very well, a player down, to take the pressure without losing control or conceding a goal. After twenty-odd minutes Lydia Miles is on the field to bring Carterton back to a full team. The new balance was quickly demonstrated with Carterton’s first strike, on target, but straight to the goalie. Lauren Major also had a good strike, but only found the post, then Bonita Penn, also good but no cigar! Just five minutes left in the first half and Bonita scores.

Half-time Carterton FC 1 v Oxford Bluebirds 0.

The start of the second half saw some great mid-field footwork by Megan Glyn, getting the ball to Lauren. Bluebirds then had a good chance to even things with a  well-struck free-kick – fortunately an even better save by Marta stopped the equalizer. The final twenty-five minutes were a frenzy of activity. The forty-seventh minute saw a Carterton goal disallowed because the referee had already blown for a free-kick. Then Lauren managed to break through for Carterton’s second goal. Bonita made a fabulous throw-in creating another chance for Lauren. This was followed by a great run through, also by Bonita, to get another ball to Lauren and without mistake; Lauren scored her second to make it three-nil. Bluebirds were by no means disheartened and managed to get one back with fifteen minutes left on the clock, their number-five sticking it in. Carterton were in no way under threat, however, with just four-minutes left Lydia got their fourth goal.
Good match!

Girl of the game went to Gaz, without her strong defending this could have been a different story

06.03.10 Carterton FC 0 Marston Saints Angels 2

Grey skies and a slight breeze gave good conditions for this important league cup match. Carterton kicked-off for a late start at 11.25. Although Marston gained possession after two-minutes, Marta Dyet managed to get through for Carterton’s first chance of the match. Marston returned by applying sustained pressure for many minutes in Carterton’s half. Though control reversed as Bonita Penn put in a great throw down the line. Carterton maintained control and with fifteen-minutes played Lauren Major attempted a shot, but the ball bounced back to Megan Glyn, who couldn’t get enough on it so it passed to Lydia. All within inches of the goal, but just couldn’t get through. Marston made no such hesitation five-minutes as Danny managed to lob one in from a long way out to score the first goal. There seemed to be some confusion almost as if Carterton thought the ball was out of play. This seemed to add to Marston’s confidence and they followed up with three clear chances and then their striker, Becks, scored in injury time just before the half-time whistle.
Half-Time Score Carterton 0 : 2 Marston Saints Angels
The second half took some time to warm up. Marston came out fighting after ten-minutes, creating a chance, but Katie Light saved it with skill. Lucy Henshaw almost got Carterton back in to the game with an excellent pass giving half a chance for Marta. Marston were strong on the break and managed to get past Katie for an almost-certain goal, but fortunately, Meagan Hill managed to get back to defend it strongly. Two quick runs with great crosses from Lydia Miles sadly came to nothing and the game ended without further score.

01.03.10 Wychwood 0 Carterton FC 3

The Carterton Girls welcomed the Wychwood Girls to Carterton FC to play their previously postponed away match. With a string of unplayed matches to fit in, Wychwood were happy to play the match at the floodlit Kilkenny Lane, with the promise of sausage and chips afterwards in the lounge bar. A good number of the girls from both teams attending the same school brought an added dimension to the game and spirits were high on both sides.
Wychood kicked off, earning an early corner from which Carterton broke and forced a save from the Wychwood keeper. Some brilliant work from Bonita Penn got the ball into the visitor’s box once more but the ball, bouncing around in front of the goal, would not go in! There followed a period of sustained pressure from Carterton with lovely short, carefully measured passes, building up attacks - from Meagan Hill to Hayley Wrightson, then onto Lucy Henshaw, over to Lydia Miles and back across to Marta Dyet. Wychwood soaked up the pressure and managed to break a few times themselves but the Carterton defence would race back to support Katie Light in goal. Becci Hodgson using her speed to great advantage, playing the ball out of the area with confidence and skill. Jade Pitts, Gayna Eeles and Sarah Derrick completing the back four were well organised and communicating well.
A great ball from Lucy put Lydia through, bringing the keeper right out to clear. Lauren now came on for Lydia and the play was firmly in the Wychwood half. Suddenly, Wychwood stormed down the pitch but a fantastic turn of speed from Meagan and a timely tackle in the box put the ball out of play. Wychwood’s corner was picked up by Marta and a string of passes took the ball to the other end, back to Marta and into the back of the net to put Carterton into the lead. Carterton FC 1 Wychwood 0. Wychwood immediately fought back, winning a corner and getting in a shot on target, saved by Katie. At the other end, Lauren won the ball in the box and struck a cracking ball over the head of the keeper into the top of the net. Carterton went into half time 2 goals up.
Half time: Wychwood 0 Carterton FC 2
Wychwood came out fighting, straight into an attack - Becci was quick to catch her player and Katie came out to clear. Katy Brooks was on the pitch now and she settled into her game immediately with a perfect pass and move combination contributing to another Carterton break. Marta, playing in the centre forward position for the first time was having a fantastic game, forcing another good save and narrowly missing from a super strike soon after. Wychwood were certainly still in the game and looked like they were on for a goal but their player was ruled off-side. The Carterton girls lost a bit of shape for 5 minutes or so, but some nice movement from Sarah and Meagan, some strong defending from Jade and Gaz put them back on track. A lot of activity in the Wychwood goal mouth saw Lauren slot the ball past the keeper, her second goal and Carterton’s third. All credit to Wychwood who still tried to press forward and with Katie blocking a strong shot, the final whistle blew.
Full time: Wychwood 0 Carterton FC 3
What an excellent game of football the girls played this evening. Everything seemed to come together resulting in a superb team performance. ‘Girl of the Game’ was awarded to Marta for a stunning personal performance as centre forward.
Well done to all the girls, from both Carterton and Wychwood!

27.02.10 Carterton FC 3 v Tower Hill Vixens 2.

Carterton kicked-off under a grey sky at Monahan Way. Tower Hill were quick to apply pressure and the game soon became very lively. Carterton returned fire with a super through-ball straight through the centre from Lucy Henshaw. She also made another superb pass, this time reaching Lydia Miles. Tower Hill’s goalie saved it twice, but the second deflection delivered the ball to Lauren Major who snuck it in for Carterton to take the lead. Carterton continued in this vein for several minutes before Tower Hill regrouped and managed to apply a bit of return pressure. They caused Katie Light to save one and only a poorly struck ball prevented the equaliser. Carterton were superb on the break from this and Marta Dyet scored their second goal in the fourteenth minute. Tower Hill’s Steph Bent managed to get one back in the eighteenth-minute and then also got the equaliser in the twentieth. A lively game continued with Megan Glyn battling hard to get Carterton back in to the game. All of Carterton’s mid-field played well and soon created another chance for Lydia to put them in front before the break.
Half-time: Carterton FC 3 v Tower Hill Vixens 2
The start of the second half had none of the frenetic pace that typified the match in the first half. Both sides seemed a little tired and some of the play lacked commitment. Things brightened up significantly after about ten-minutes. Bonita Penn showed a very hard work rate but sadly couldn’t create chances from her battling. Initiative switched to Tower Hill as the final quarter approached. In the sixteenth and seventeenth minute they managed a great cross, hit the woodwork and sent another cross floating dangerously across the face of Carterton’s goal, but all without reward. Becci Hodgson had to throw caution to the wind to defend another onslaught and Katie was at full-stretch to prevent another Tower Hill attack becoming a goal. Carterton managed to contain Tower Hill but did little to create their own chances meaning the second half was without score.
Full-time: Carterton FC 3 v Tower Hill Vixens 2
Girl of the game was awarded to Megan Glyn for an excellent performance in mid-field. Megan always gives 100% but this week, there seemed to be more! Super tackling, turning and shielding of the ball; such determination, looking up, passing and moving – excellent!
Well done to all the girls from both teams, who battled hard throughout the match. A thoroughly enjoyable and entertaining game played in good spirits!

U15's away game to Wychwood that was postponed a few weeks ago has been rescheduled for Monday 1st March. This game will be played at Kilkenny Lane even though it is Wychwoods home fixture

13.02.10 Carterton FC 0 v Radley 4

Well it may have been Valentine’s weekend but there was little love lost between two of the top teams in the league. Radley kicked-off and were quick to apply pressure. Gayna Eeles defended well and Katie Light made a good save preventing two of Radley’s early attacks becoming goals. Carterton struggled to get a break until a strong Bonita Penn managed to find a chink in Radley’s armour, but Radley were as strong in defence as they were up front denying Carterton any space to turn it in to a chance. Katie saved a few more, but the thirteenth-minute saw Radley’s Ciera kick one past to put them one goal ahead. Just one minute later, Sarah, managed to get another one through to make it two-nil. Marta Dyet and Bonita returned fire with some good pressure. Marta also created Carterton’s best chance thus far from an excellently struck corner. A further break came for Carterton with Lydia Miles running through with a good strike sadly hitting the woodwork. Whilst Radley could lay claim to owning the first quarter, Carterton definitely had the upper hand as the first-half drew to a close.
Half-time score Carterton FC 0 v Radley 2.
Carterton re-started and continued in the same spirit as they’d finished the first half. Sadly this only contained Radley rather than created chances, whereas Radley were quick to exploit even the slightest opportunity. Katie found herself a long way out through brave goal-keeping, but Radley got by; fortunately Meagan Hill ran back and managed to clear the ball just a few yards in front of the goal. Becci Hodgson also defended well, keeping pace with Izzy, Radley’s very quick striker. With ten minutes left Izzy was through on her next attempt and scored Radley’s third goal. Carterton returned with a great combination from Hayley & Bonita; so near, but so far. Radley made no mistake in the closing minutes, claiming their fourth goal and a clear victory.

As ever, a tough decision faced Tim to name Girl of the Game. Bonita was awarded the accolade for a spirited performance and real drive throughout the match.

06.02.10 Kidlington Youth 3 v Carterton FC 0

Apologies for the late submission of this report. Not a reflection on the game, which was fast and furious, nor the score, which sadly did not go Carterton’s way but just due to the pressures of work!
Carterton kicked off this much awaited match (neither team had played for almost two months) but it was Kidlington , who applied the early pressure. The Carterton defence were in good form – Jade Pitts, Becci Hodgson, Sarah Derrick and Gaz Eeles, along with keeper Katie Light efficiently dealt with everything Kidlington threw at them. As the first half progressed, Carterton began to play some lovely passing moves. Hayley Wrightson putting Marta Dyet through and Megan Glyn sending Lydia Miles on her way to pressure the Kidlington keeper. Bonita Penn, in her first game since returning to Carterton, settled well into her game, providing excellent support up front and racing back to help in defence. As the first half came to a close, Meagan Hill sent a lovely ball out of the defence for Lydia to run onto but Kidlington closed down the attack, then launched their own offence finishing with an accurate shot on goal – saved! The first half finished Kidlington Youth 0 v Carterton F C 0.
Kidlington came out strongly in the second half. Carterton soaked up the pressure and Becci was fantastic, calmly playing the ball out of danger but Kidlington finally broke through and the ball found its way into the back of the net. 1 – 0 to Kidlington. Carterton came back immediately but Kidlington responded with further attacks. A fast and exciting period followed, with Lucy Henshaw playing a key role holding up the ball, allowing her team mates to get forward. Megan Bint was now working hard in defence and Lauren Major joined the game up front. Carterton were playing some wonderful football but against the run of play, Kidlington scored a second. Carterton were not down-hearted, an excellent ball put through Megan Glyn, who was unluckily deemed to be off-side. Kidlington’s break saw Katie come out right out to collect the ball, then Marta made a run down the wing, passed across to Lauren – just wide! The game continued in this way, swinging back and forth - Kidlington scored a third; Carterton fired back with a shot just over the bar and the whistle blew.
Final score Kidlington Youth 3 v Carterton F C 0.
The score in no way reflected the battle that took place. Tim congratulated the girls on their performance – their commitment, enthusiasm and attitude could not be faulted.
‘Girl of the game’ was awarded to Becci for an outstanding performance in defence – a wonderful mix of speed, determination and calmness under pressure. Well done to Becci and all the girls!

12.12.09 Highworth Town 1 v Carterton FC 3.

Playing on a sloping, mud heavy pitch with no subs, against worthy opponents, the Carterton girls knew they would have to battle hard to win this match. Highworth kicked off and immediately applied some early pressure with their first shot going wide; the second saved by keeper Katie Light. Carterton broke back with an accurate ball down the wing from Katy Brooks, a lovely pass from Hayley Wrightson to Marta Dyet but the Highworth defence got the ball away. Back in Carterton’s half Jade Pitts and Sarah Derrick were supporting each other well in defence and along with Gaz Eeles and Megan Bint they managed to deal confidently with the Highworth attacks ... but suddenly, there was a lot of activity in the goal mouth, with the ball bouncing back and forth, a shot went towards the goal - Katie got her hand to it but it went in. 1 – 0 to Highworth.
From the re-start, Carterton’s Lydia Miles immediately took up the attack, with an excellent run, her shot going just wide. Megan B then put through an excellent ball and there followed a period of pressure from Carterton. Some lovely control and shielding of the ball from Megan Glyn and Hayley in midfield set Lydia off on a run, bringing the keeper out to block the shot. Then back to the other end where a free kick had been awarded just outside the box. With the kick deflected, the ball was headed off the line and then bounced around for some time before Katie was able to pounce on it. Solid work in defence from Jade and battling from Gaz got the ball up to Lauren Major in the Highworth box, where Carterton seemed to have been awarded a free kick – but no, it was a penalty for hand ball. Marta stepped up and levelled the score 1- 1. Within a minute, Lauren Major was back in front of goal, netting a long shot beating the diving keeper to take the score to Highworth 1 Carterton FC 2. The half time whistle blew not long after.
Highworth came out strongly in the second half, eager to score an equaliser. In spite of the mud sapping everyone’s energy, the game continued at a good pace with plenty of action at both ends. A shot from Highworth was saved, the rebound hit the bar and went over; fantastic battling from Marta put Lydia through but the shot just went wide. With every girl on the pitch putting in maximum effort, while managing to maintain some humour, this was a very entertaining game. There were so many chances at both ends but it seemed that there would be no more goals ... until minutes before the end of the match, Lydia put in a perfect cross, which was slotted away by a jubilant Lauren.
Final score: Highworth Town 1 v Carterton FC 3
Tim praised all the girls for their team work and commitment on the pitch, giving particular praise to Katie in goal, and to Megan B for an increasingly confident performance. ‘Girl of the Game’ was awarded to Lauren for her super work rate and two excellent goals. Well done, everyone!

05.12.09 Carterton FC 3 v Oxford City 2

It was a beautiful day for the beautiful game with sun streaming over Monahan Way. Things got underway promptly for a 10:30 kick off and Carterton were quick to pounce. A brilliant through-ball to Lydia Miles was crossed to Marta Dyet, but just a little too long to be a real goal-scoring chance with the ball ending up left of target. Not long to wait until Jade Pitts lobbed a perfect ball straight over City’s defence giving Megan Glyn another half-chance. This was swiftly followed by Marta’s cross to Lydia for another shot – close – but still no goal. Either way this could only be described as a positive start with only 6-minutes played. City then had their first real chance; fortunately Carterton’s defence, although a little muddled, were effective in preventing a goal. Carterton returned fire and Lydia put the ball in the top right corner of the goal for the first and well-deserved goal. One-nil, 9-minutes played. Hayley Wrightson and Megan battled hard in mid-field getting a ball through to Lydia, but the off-side flag was up and the chance lost. Hayley also got a lovely pass through City’s line giving Lydia a one-on-one chance against City’s goalie, who showed some deft goal-keeping to prevent a score. Minute-19 saw City awarded a free kick on the edge of Carterton’s box. Credit to Meagan Hill for keeping it out. Carterton returned fire again this time with Lucy Henshaw; only denied a goal by City’s goalie. City probably got their best chance in the first half with just 5-minutes left to play. Katie Light was at full stretch to get a hand to the ball and had to recover quickly as it wobbled precariously near the goal. A further off-side decision prevented Carterton from extending their first-half advantage, leaving it at 1-0 at the break.

The second half saw a transformed City dominate the first few minutes. Carterton barely got a look-in and City’s Lauren Smith capitalised with a simple, but well-executed goal. All square with 26-minutes to go, this was turning in to a very good match of two of the best teams in the league. Things were fairly tight until Hayley got a breakthrough launching a superb ball for Marta to run and strike at the edge of the box, straight over the head of City’s goalie and in to the net to get back in front. Katy Brooks was next to set up a lovely ball; getting a near-perfect pass to Megan for another strong finish to put Carterton two ahead with the score at 3-1. City weren’t going to take this without a fight and they came back with Katie Burton taking full advantage of a fluky bounce to get their second goal. 3-2 and only five minutes to go. Carterton held it together well and maintained their lead to the final whistle. A great match; one of the best of the season in my opinion. Well done to all players.

Girl of the Game was awarded to Hayley Wrightson for a flawless performance in mid-field throughout the match and setting up some great chances.

07.11.09 Tower Hill Vixens 2 v Carterton FC 0.

For those of you that can get bored by reading a long match report, this one may offer some relief as it is unusually short. To be frankly honest Carterton simply didn’t play to their usual high standard and Tower Hill were allowed to take control for much of the match. Clear skies gave a sharp, sun-drenched pitch for Carterton’s kick-off. Tower Hill were quick to win possession and within a minute had got a shot lobbed high towards Carterton’s goal. Katie Light judged it well to prevent an early score. In fact Katie was under pressure for a lot of the game and displayed a high level of confidence and competence. Also defending well was Gayna Eeles; reading Tower Hill’s game-plan well and responding with style. There were moments when Carterton looked like the winners they are. Jade Pitts and Meagan Hill, followed by Megan Glyn and Lauren Major put together some good combinations, with Lauren coming closest to scoring with an excellent strike just a few feet off target. The breakthrough in this tight game had to come and it was Tower Hill’s Roberta Dix, who managed to sneak the ball in to the net in the twenty-seventh minute.
Half-Time Tower Hill Vixens 1 v Carterton FC 0.
Tower Hill continued the pressure on the re-start causing more work, well executed, by Gayna and Katie. The tightness of the game also continued with neither team giving quarter; almost a show of mutual respect for two of the top-three teams in the league. There was little to get the pulse racing for much of the second half and the game was nearing its end when Tower Hill’s Charlie Hamilton took full advantage of an unusually loose defence to get a relatively simple goal. Tower Hill continued to keep it tight for the remainder of the game leaving little chance for Carterton to make a come-back.
Full-Time Tower Hill Vixens 2 v Carterton FC 0.
A disappointing match giving the first loss of the season will surely be followed by a return to form in the next game. C’mon Carterton! Girl of the Game was awarded to Gayna Eeles for her excellent work in defence throughout the match.

24.10.09 Cholsey Bluebirds 0 v Carterton FC 1.

Winning the toss, Caterton took a tactical decision to change ends and play into a blustery, leaf churning wind for the first half. Playing at home the blue shirted Cholsey kicked off the Cup match just as the rain started.
Looking a different team to the side Carterton encountered just a few weeks previously, Cholsey soon forced a corner and an early save from Cartertons’ keeper Katie Light. Quick, cleverly placed passes from Cartertons’ Lucy Henshaw; first sent Lydia Miles streaking through on the left and then set up Marta Dyet on the right for a striking shot on target saved by Cholsey’s alert keeper. On a narrow pitch there was little room for the mid field players to manoeuvre and play went fairly swiftly from one end to the other. Twenty minutes into the match a Cholsey corner created two shots on target and an exceptional two fisted punch from a leaping Katie to clear her goal. Jade Pitts, displaying her usual composure in defence, struck the ball up field to create a run for Lydia and the opportunity for Hayley Wrightson to take a left footed shot on goal against a Cholsey keeper also in great form on the day. Having tacitly changed wings, Marta and Lydia attempted to upset the balance of the opposition defence. However, although full of opportunities, the first half ended at 0-0 and all to play for after the break.
With the wind now behind them Carterton started the second half, within a minute passing from Jade and Lucy onto Lydia to shoot saw the yellow shirt of the Cholsey keeper stretch for another save. Keeping the pressure on, fleet footed and determined Lauren Major won a corner which Marta took, Lydia gathered and returned for Marta to finally beat the keeper and give Carterton a one goal lead.
To their credit Cholsey kept the pressure up and Megan Bint playing her first full game for Carterton was called upon to make a number of timely tackles in defence. Half way through the second half a tiring Cholsey team enabled Carterton to put together a period of pleasing, passing play in mid-field. Defender Becci Hodgson started a forward move which resulted in a shot from Jade just being cleared off the line. Counter attacking the Blues’ number 10 found an opening and was soon clear with just the Carterton keeper to beat, charging forward to meet the challenge, Katie forced the striker to shoot and pulled off a brave save ending Cholsey’s best clear chance of the game. With growing confidence the Carterton team started to build attacks from defence; Sarah Derrick, using the mid-field players to setup the strikers and two well worked chances disappointingly beaten by off-side calls.
This was an entertaining, pressured game with skilful defending, well taken corners and chances frustrated by two terrific goal keepers; Carterton awarding their goalie Katie Light “Girl of the Game” for a confident performance, exciting saves and the season’s first clean sheet.

17.10.09 Carterton F C 2 v Kidlington Youth 1.

Carterton U15 coach Tim Miles has been working hard to get the girls prepared for what was expected to be a tough game against Kidlington Youth. A biting breeze created a surprisingly cold morning which had the spectators huddled together in anticipation.
Kidlington kicked off and launched a concerted attack against Carterton requiring composed defending by Jade Pitts in the centre and an energised Becci Hodgson on the left. Easing the pressure with a long, well placed pass defender Gaz Eeles sent Lydia Miles on a lighting speed run down the right wing, cutting in, her final shot hitting the side netting of Kidlington goal.
Kidlington re-launched their attack and a chance at distance just cleared the Carterton crossbar. Excellent goal keeping by the Kidlington keeper kept out two more Carterton opportunities in quick succession.
Determination and speed on the left wing from an interchanging Marta Dyet and Lauren Major balanced the Carterton attacks from both wings, but the tight marking from the Kidlington players created a mid-field battle of tackles and players of both teams working extremely hard to string together the successful passes required for the attacking opportunities.
The 0-0 deadlock of the first half was soon broken; following a wide shot from the Kidlington kick off presented Carterton with the chance to send the ball up field to Megan Glyn who had created rare space just inside the Kidlington half. Megan seized her opportunity and beautifully struck a high, long range shot over the top of a stretching keeper with an impossible task.
Creditable, persistent pressure from the Kidlington players finally forced a defensive error by Carterton and the ball ran over the goal line. The match was even again at 1-1. Throughout the second half the commitment of Kidlington was evidenced by a number of forced corners, a shot hitting the post and another over the crossbar.Team communication raised Carterton’s game resulting in a display of high quality passing football, the basis of their growing reputation; firstly with Gaz Eeles placing a pass over the defence to send Lucy Henshaw on exciting, but thwarted attack, on the Kidlington goal. The cleared ball quickly returned by Meagan Hill via a probing pass from midfield for Lydia Miles to run onto and play skilfully again to Lucy for a well taken strike and a 2-1 lead.
From a spectator’s point of view this was an entertaining and exciting game that saw the Carterton team finish with a flourish of wide attacks and crosses. As anticipated Kidlington had proved to be a difficult team to breakdown and a worthy challenge for Carterton’s skilful defence; reflected by the girl of the game award which deservedly went to left back Becci Hodgson for “a great performance”.

10.10.09 Carterton FC 9 v Kidlington Tigers 3

They often say that football is a ‘game of two halves’. This one wasn’t, it was a game of three thirds. Fortunately Carterton owned the beginning and the end, but the middle was going all the Tigers’ way. This was one of the most explosive matches of the season so far. It was a lively start under a bright sun with a light breeze. Tigers looked like they really meant business with a very ambitious long-shot in the first minute. It was well off target, but demonstrated that they were in no-way fazed by the unbeaten Carterton. The home team fired straight back bouncing one off the Tigers’ post and forcing a corner. Marta Dyet takes it, Jade sets up a great chance and Lydia Miles finishes the job with the first goal after just three minutes and control firmly with Carterton. The whole Carterton team showed real finesse; playing great, entertaining football. Just another few minutes in Lucy Henshaw has a shot, Marta gets a fabulous cross in and also takes another excellent corner. Jade Pitts received the ball and on first touch deflects it across the face of Tigers’ goal – how it didn’t go in is beyond belief. Dominance continued with incredible pace from Marta on the left and Lydia on the right; Tigers couldn’t match their pace. Another goal was inevitable, but we had to wait to the twenty-first minute to see a spectacular cross from Jade to meet the feet of Lydia for an excellent run and equally excellent strike to make it two-nil. The Tigers came back and Becci Hodgson defended sternly to prevent them and set up a break for Carterton and Lydia’s hat-trick - three-nil. Then Marta had a shot, and then Lucy lobbed a lovely pass in to the box, to Lydia who put it in the net, only sadly to have been disallowed as she was deemed to have been off-side. Megan Glyn, who, like the rest of the team, had played well throughout set up the fourth goal with some immense battling to win mid-field possession and get it to Lucy Henshaw to finish the job. However, it was now that the tide turned for the second “third” of the match. The Tigers showed no sign of giving in and played their best phase of the game, resulting in their number-seven, Harriet Coe getting a goal back making it four, one at half-time.
Tigers continued this attack as the second half got under way; just one-minute in Emma Dalton sneaked one in with a perfectly placed threading its way through Carterton’s defence. On the re-start Lauren Major had a super run up the left and had a shot, but it was too-tight an angle to be a real chance of a goal. Tigers took control again with Rachel W scoring their third goal and reducing the gap to just one goal. The turning point to the final “third” of the match came with a perfect cross by Lydia, straight to the feet of Lucy to make a simple finish and take the gap back up to two. Five-three and fifteen minutes to go. These fifteen minutes were almost an exhibition of Carterton at their best. Katy Brooks passing to Lucy and to Lydia for their sixth goal. Marta with a super run down the left for the seventh. Lauren straight through for the eighth, and Lucy got yet another goal with just three minutes on the clock. All credit to the Tigers, they still fought to the end of the match and Megan had to make a big run back to prevent them scoring in the last minute. The excitement ended with a score of Nine-Three. Five matches played, five won. It doesn’t get better than that.
Girl of the Game was Lydia Miles for a strong performance throughout and four goals to show for her efforts - Cor, what a game!

03.10.09 Marston Saints Angels 1 v Carterton FC 3.

It was a blustery, overcast, autumnal morning for this morning’s league match against Marston Saints. Marston kicked off just two-minutes after the scheduled ten o’clock start. The game started with intense mid-field battling with neither side giving quarter. It took a few minutes to get any breakthrough and it was Marston first to go on the offensive with a deflected strike earning a corner. It was well taken and met with a volley which was only just over Carterton’s crossbar – a bit of a wake-up call to the undefeated Carterton that they should never be complacent. And wake them up it certainly did; some fabulous teamwork brought the ball to Hayley Wrightson for a perfect pass to Lucy Henshaw to score the first goal of the game, with only four-minutes elapsed. Jade Pitts must be mentioned throughout the next phase for excellent defending and creating chances for the mid-field and beyond. Carterton were well in control and another chance came from Sarah Derrick’s throw in for Hayley to have a shot. Unfortunately it was a little too softly taken giving Marston’s goalie an easy save. Megan Glyn scored a relatively simple goal in the twenty-first minute – simple, or not, it put Carterton two goals ahead. Marston weren’t taking this without retaliation and their comeback just a minute later was the first real test for Katie Light who deftly pushed the ball clear of the crossbar to prevent a Marston goal. The resulting corner was well taken right across the face of the goal, but no-one from Marston could get a touch to finish it. Further strong defending by Gayna Eeles and Jade was needed to prevent the determination of Marston capitalising on their chances. Moving towards half-time Carterton regained control giving a chance to Lydia Miles that caused the Marston goalie to do an almost duplicate flick to push the ball clear of their crossbar. Marta Dyet placed her corner kick with her usual precision giving Jade a header at very close range which ended up just a few inches right of target, leaving the half-time score Marston 0, Carterton 2.
The second half took a few minutes to warm up and it was Carterton first to make an impression. Marta’s strike bounced off the post and Lydia was swift to follow it up giving Marston’s defence a lot of work to prevent Carterton stretching their lead. Carterton, however, were obviously not content with a meagre two and kept up a great team effort to create another chance for Lucy who made no mistake in getting Carterton’s third goal. New signing Lauren Major was obviously gaining confidence and showed some real attitude in mid-field. Otherwise, there was a bit of a flat period for a fair chunk of the second half; perhaps the frenetic early activity was taking its toll. This seemed to give Marston a bit of a lift and their new-found confidence rewarded their Rebecca Siefers with a goal. But with just ten-minutes left on the clock, this was Carterton’s game. Final Score Marston Saints 1 : 3 Carterton.
The difficult task of selecting one player for Girl-of-the-Game from such a plethora of good performers was given to the parents. A heated discussion ended with the decision to award Jade Pitts for her consistent performance throughout, excellent defending and creating some good chances.

26.09.09 Cholsey Bluebirds 1 v Carterton FC 8.

This was a 10 a-side game, as Cholsey sportingly removed a player to match Carterton’s ten. Cholsey kicked off and quickly put in a long ball, which was blocked by keeper Katie Light and the subsequent corner was headed over the bar by the home team. Carterton settled in - Meagan Hill passed a lovely ball to Lydia Miles, kicked out by the Cholsey keeper for Carterton’s first corner. An excellent corner from Marta Dyet almost reached the foot of Lydia ... but not quite. Then Marta made no mistake hitting the back of the net, as she took an inch perfect and perfectly weighted ball from Hayley Wrightson. One nil to Carterton. Only minutes later, a cross from Lydia was deflected by a Cholsey player to double the lead. Carterton continued to push forward, with some deft touches in midfield from Hayley and Meagan, some strong tackling from Sarah Derrick and Gaz Eeles and with Becci Hodgson’s speed on the wing and Jade Pitts’ strength in defence, Cholsey struggled to establish themselves. However, they continued to battle, winning a corner, only for Katie to come out to collect it, bravely diving into a midst of flying feet. Shortly after, unfortunately, Hayley was injured in a tackle and had to leave the field, leaving Carterton with only 9 players to finish the half. With some excellent passing and positional play, Marta scored her second and Lucy Henshaw scored twice (although her second goal was ruled off-side), bringing the score to Cholsey 0 Carterton 4. Carterton pressed on with some lovely defensive work from Jade, tight on the line and a terrific ball from Meagan to Marta. Cholsey were keen to get back into the game, winning a corner - expertly dealt with by Gaz; winning a free kick - superbly defended by Jade. Carterton finished the half in attacking style with Lucy’s shot going just wide.

The morning had really warmed up now and the ‘crowd’ were basking in the sun. Hayley was back on the field for Carterton under instruction to ‘go easy’. In a turn of speed, Lydia lost her marker and beat the diving keeper to increase Carterton’s lead. Sadly, the keeper was injured and had to be replaced. Carterton lost a bit of concentration at this point and in a goal mouth scramble, Cholsey pulled one back – Cholsey 1 Carterton 5. The game restarted with an alternative move from Lucy, taking Cholsey by surprise – suddenly Lydia was through, she picked her spot to score Carterton’s sixth and her second goal. Carterton were back in their stride now with Marta and Becci working wonderfully together on the wing. Lydia set off on another run, found herself one on one with the goalie and made an unselfish pass across to Marta, who fired home for her hat-trick. Still finding some spirit, Cholsey made a break but the final shot was easily collected by Katie. As she finished the first half, so Lucy finished the second, this time with a goal.
Final score: Cholsey 1 Carterton FC 8
‘Girl of the Game’ was awarded to Marta for an impressive performance of attacking play and great finishing. Special praise was also given to Becci, recognising her increased commitment to the game. Well done to all the girls for putting in high energy performances on such a hot September morning and for displaying such excellent team work.

19.09.09 Carterton FC 3 v Wychwood 1

A warm, sunny, windless morning welcomed Wychwood to Carterton’s Monahan Way. Carterton were obviously keen to build on their successful start to the season and kicked off at 11:10. The game took a few minutes to warm up and Hayley Wrightson got a good pass to Lydia Miles who got a cross aimed for Marta Dyet, but Wychwood’s goalie managed to intercept, preventing an early lead. It wasn’t long though until Megan Glyn did get a pass to Marta causing the goalie a bit more work. In fact the first quarter was a bit of a Carterton carte blanche for their mid-field and forwards to launch one attack after another with Lucy Henshaw and Becci Hodgson joining the fray. It was only a lack of sheer power in the finishing that left them without a goal from all this skill and effort. Wychwood returned fire with their own brand of onslaught and it was only a tremendous run-back by Becci and some stern tackling that prevented them scoring in the sixteenth-minute. Two minutes later Wychwood were close again, but the safe hands of Katie Light gathered up the ball. Marta was quick to respond with a super run up the left, but Wychwood had a real sprinter to fend her off; they must have as there are few players that out-run Marta! Katy Brooks was also on good form, launching a cross in to the box, but no one could get on the end of it. Katy also sent another down the line, but it was a little too long and went out for goal kick. In the last few minutes of the half the Wychwood goalie made an unfortunate error; handling the ball just outside the box and giving Carterton a free kick. Lucy showed her true power with a cracking strike deflected off the left post and in to the back of the net. At long last all the effort finally showed on the scoreboard with Carterton leading at half time by one goal.
Half Time Score: Carterton FC 1 v Wychwood 0.
Wychwood got the second half underway but Carterton took control for the first five-minutes. Wychwood replied with an attack, giving Katie some work to do in goal. In fact the first twenty-minutes of this half were a real ding-dong, with both sides showing deft skill and gritty determination. Katy almost made a breakthrough with a firm strike towards the top-right corner of Wychwood’s goal; credit to their goalie for keeping it out. Then it was Marta who made another breakthrough, scoring a superb goal from a very tight angle to put Carterton two goals in front. The twenty-fifth minute saw a tough decision for the referee to call a foul against Carterton just a yard or two outside their box. Abbie Proffitt took a near-perfect free kick to pull a goal back for Wychwood. Following a drop-ball won by Megan, Wychwood’s opponent was injured and, without substitute, they were reduced to ten players. Carterton capitalised on the advantage with Marta’s corner kick reaching Megan’s header to get their third goal. Unfortunately, this also caused another Wychwood injury with their goalie having to come off the field. In a sporting gesture Carterton took one of their players off for the last few minutes. This was a great match; very entertaining throughout and both sides played well. For Carterton it couldn’t be better; played two, won two – long may it continue!

With such a team effort it was tough to single out one Girl of the Game. Tim ultimately awarded the trophy to Lucy Henshaw for some great positional play, always being in the right place at the right time. Katy Brooks also received a special mention for a confident, skilful performance and reading the game well.

12.09.09 Oxford Bluebirds 2 v Carterton FC 4

Oxford Bluebirds warmly welcomed Carterton to their ground to kick off the new season and in perfect conditions, Bluebirds got the game underway. Within minutes Carterton were caught out, as Bluebird’s Chrissy Clifton scored. Immediately, the visitors were on the attack with an excellent build up involving Jade Pitts, Hayley Wrightson, Megan Glyn and Lydia Miles - the ball was forced out for a throw. A period of pressure from Carterton followed with a shot from Lucy Henshaw and some good work just outside the box from Meagan Hill. Then a corner – Marta Dyet sent across a perfect ball, which floated into the top far corner of the net and Carterton equalised.
Bluebirds fought back and Katy Brooks on the left wing made some good tackles, while keeping tight to her player. Jade and goal keeper, Katie Light, communicated well and once again Carterton were on the offensive. Megan won the ball in midfield, passed wide to Marta, who put in an excellent cross, struck home by Lydia. Bluebirds 1 Carterton FC 2. Once again, Bluebirds launched a strong attack bringing Katie to the edge of her box, forcing them wide and the ball eventually went out of play. Back in midfield, Hayley was having a fantastic match, challenging confidently for the ball, tackling hard and putting the ball through time and time again. Nearing the end of the first half, Lydia set off on a run, looked up and hit a super strike over the goalie - Oxford Bluebirds 1 Carterton FC 3.

It was Bluebirds, who settled into the second half quickly, pulling one back with a cracking shot from Brianna Douglas. Carterton lost momentum and shape for a while but Becci Hodgson, playing a new role, in central defence was quick to pounce on a loose ball to move the game forward and Sarah Derrick worked hard on the wing to close down many attacks. Carterton won a free kick; they found their shape again and finished the match in good form, playing good football as a team with some excellent individual skill. The game finished shortly after Marta stormed down the wing, picked her spot and scored her second goal.

‘Girl of the Game’ was tricky – all the girls played brilliantly and worked well to support each other. Eventually, Tim decided upon Meagan for showing such determination and confidence throughout the match.
A great start to the season.
